Ian Welch, an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington, specialises in cybersecurity research and his current work focuses on ransomware, the security of the Internet of Things and the behaviour of attackers.
When nine New Zealand councils considered trialling online voting for the 2019 local authority elections, Ian applauded the move to engage new technologies.
What concerned him was the lack of understanding by decision-makers about potential cybersecurity risks, and when E-voting was put on hold he was pleased with the outcome. As an educator and researcher Ian believes communities need to engage with the Government about cybersecurity safety and be more aware around myths and truths about cybersecurity.
